Enter the Void

What the fuck is wrong with Gaspar? Did he have an unhappy childhood? I don't know, but his stories are always, to say the least, bleak.
This is no exception. There's death, always.

And he really really wants his audience to have seizures. From the very first second, with the loudest, flashiest and fastest credit sequence ever, to the long flashy lights or different colors, if you're an epileptic, do not see this film. This is like watching the last sequence of 2001 on acid. And for 2 hours.
This being said, the visual effects are quite stunning and this film could have been cool and scary as hell in 3D.

Now, those who know me know I am not a feminist, at all. But even I wonder why Gaspar is so mysoginistic. And if I can see that, I'd love to show his films to a feminist. I mean, here's a list about the women in his films:
- Pregnant woman is a monster and gets punched in the belly.
- Young daughter/father weird sex thing.
- Woman gets raped in an underpass.
- Weird brother/sister thing.
- Sister is a stripper.

Actually, in this film, women are strippers and/or hos.

And of course, like in his other films there's a scene (or two) that just seems too real for comfort. In this case, a car crash.

But, hey, at least the woman is played by Paz de la Huerta, so you know you get to see her half-naked most of the time. I could have done without the abortion scene though.
Not gory, just too... realistic.

In the end, I think I see what Gaspar tried to convey or say, but it's drawn-out, unnecessarily long and his gimmicky camera work, while cool at first, gets old very quickly. This is mental masturbation at its best. Or worst, depending on your point of view. Personally, I'm on the fence.
