I'm guessing N.U. Unruh loves this film.
This is a film about music and the people around it. This includes a police inspector who hates it, the people
he is after who make music no matter what, no matter where (percussion terrorists!), and his family, all elitist snobbish prodigies.
It is funny, it is entertaining, it is inventive beyond most things I've seen and the musical numbers are just
great. No, no: don't worry, this isn't like a cheesy musical, far from it.
The sound is, obviously, a very important part of this film and it's really well done... The police inspector is unable to hear anything (or anyone) that has been touched or used by the musicians and the sound design is really well done. For example, he can't hear a dog barking, but we still hear the rattling of his chain. He can't hear a stamp stamping, but we hear the rustle of the paper. Very subtle, but also very important to make it believable. They didn't just 'mute' everything or shoot without sound.
As mentionned in passing above: the musicians only use objects (and people) found in different settings for their music. I won't give anything away, but trust me when I tell you it's wildly entertaining. This is like 'Stomp,' except funny and good.
In the end, the police get awfully mad and so they decide to crack down on all non-classical music. Buskers, percussionists and rock musicians all get arrested. But not in a tragic dramatic way, in a very funny way. In a very... pardon the pun... off-beat way.
There are some great moments and images, but for some reason one of the first one is my favorite: a man playing drums in a van as it speeds down a highway. And the great animation sequence.
Sure, there is am obligatory love story, but that doesn't really take away from the fun. So let's give it to the Danes for having made a really fun and funny film about music.
In the end, the message is that music can be found anywhere, anytime and it shouldn't be a pompous black-tie affair and it definitely should not be elitist in anyway.
That's why I'm guessing Blixa Bargeld probably hates this film.
