Nice little film with a great cast about a bank heist. Not violent, not suspensful, it almost feels like a not-so-great Woody Allen film, without the humor. But it's far from being boring, even though it is rather predictable.
I am not sure why I didn't dislike the film more, probably because James Caan is really great in this, he makes the film and he manages to be touching, funny, and tough all at the same time.
I only have one problem. And it's a rather big problem, really... The story is about a guy who wants to dig a tunnel into a bank, from a theater. And he's supposedly a 'natural' at acting and so he becomes an actor and performs 'The Cherry Orchard.' So, of course, when you need an actor who can play someone who's a great actor, who do you think of?
Keanu Reeves.
I shit you not.
I didn't cringe as much as I did during 'Bram Stoker's Dracula,' but still... The Lincoln robot at Disneyland conveys more feelings than Reeves, who acts with his neck and sometimes his hands. He manages to act badly while not speaking and just driving. Or drinking coffee. I kept expecting him to say: 'Dude, what a bogus coffee!'
Seriously, imagine Keanu in a Chekov play and try to keep a straight face.
Yeah, see: it can't be done.
Apart from this appaling, head-scratching choice, the rest of the cast is really good and the music is great. You know the cast is really good because they never cringe when they are sharing a scene with Keanu. I often expected them to. And Farmiga even looks at him and says, without the hint of a smile, about his acting: 'You're a natural!'
So, not a great film, but far from a horrible one, even though it is predictable and it stars Keanu Reeves. Also the end, in my opinion, makes no sense, but they needed a happy ending, I guess.
In short: a good video film for a rainy day when there's nothing else to watch and you don't feel like a PS3 game.
